Most conventional HVAC installations combine heating and cooling systems with the ventilation systems and CIBSE have cautioned that this type of combined approach can exacerbate the spread of viral particles and therefore further spread the disease. CIBSE recommend separating ventilation from other systems and providing the means to purge the internal environment periodically of airborne virus.

Recent research also points to aerosol transmission of Covid as playing an important role in transmission. Ultra-violet filtration systems can be employed to kill even the smallest viral loads presented by aerosols.
